the one necessary thing

I have this little stool. it is older than me. I remember it from my first home when I was a little girl. Somehow it has managed to tag along although I have decluttered most things from back then.

Sometimes, in the morning quiet, I plop down in the floor, at this little stool, open my Bible and think about sitting at the feet of Jesus. Like Mary did. You know as in Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42.

Do you recall the story of Mary and Martha? Martha was busy. Don’t we say that word a lot? BUSY. With so many details. After all she was hosting Jesus and others for dinner. I am sure there was a certain level of stress involved in that. STRESS. Another word we use often. She was also frustrated with her sister, Mary. While she was running around like crazy – busy, stressed and frustrated -Mary sat at the feet of Jesus.

In fact, she was so frustrated at Mary that she finally came to Jesus. Not to sit at his feet and take a quiet pause or to listen and learn from him. Only to complain. Ouch.

The older I get the more I find that there is nothing new under the sun. It is only dressed a little differently. We run around like crazy too. We may not be entertaining traveling disciples, but we are busy, stressed and frustrated about many things.

What would happen if we took a quiet pause each morning (or noon or night) to sit at the feet of Jesus? Pulled up at a little stool, desk, or kitchen table. If we sat aside our to-do lists and calendar, laid down the busyness, stress, and frustration, and spent a few moments in prayer and reading God’s word? To listen and learn.

Jesus said “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:41-42

I don’t want the “many things” to keep me from the one necessary thing. The good portion. A quiet pause. To sit with Jesus.
